The Department of Philosophy and Political Science at the University of the Fraser Valley will begin offering a new major in Philosophy in the 2010/2011 academic year. The department currently has six philosophers in the department, with specializations in the history of philosophy, ethics, critical reasoning and a general commitment to applied philosophy. The political scientists in the department specialize in political theory and Canadian politics. The department has a long history of collegial governance and inter-disciplinary dialogue with diverse members.
The department now seeks to fill a position in contemporary metaphysics and/or epistemology. The successful candidate will be expected to teach an undergraduate course in symbolic logic. An ability to teach one or more of the following subjects would be an asset: the philosophy of science, the philosophy of mind, the philosophy of language. Candidates of Indigenous heritage with an ability to teach Indigenous ways of knowing are especially encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will possess a PhD, have a passion for teaching, an excellent record and program of scholarly activity, and a commitment to service in the university and the wider community. The successful candidate will be expected to develop new courses in the area of specialty. All candidates should clarify any other research and teaching strengths which may interest the department.

Academic book publisher Broadview Press will soon have an opening for the position of Acquisitions Editor, Philosophy. This position is focused on acquisition editorial work—soliciting and evaluating (through editorial and market research) proposals for new academic titles, particularly with a view to each project’s potential for course text sales. The Acquisitions Editor will report to the Executive Editor and will also work closely with the company’s production department and sales and marketing staff. Beyond acquiring books, duties will include creating promotional copy, collaborating with production staff during book production, corresponding with potential and current authors, and costing books. The position does not entail hands-on copy-editing or proofreading.
This position requires excellent written and spoken communication skills, a solid knowledge of scholarly and pedagogical trends in academic philosophy, and the ability to prioritize tasks and collaborate with colleagues in multiple departments.
A graduate degree in philosophy is preferred, but applicants with extensive undergraduate coursework in philosophy will also be considered.
The position will be based in our Calgary, Alberta office. It is currently part-time (20 hours a week). Depending on the background and abilities of the successful candidate, the position of Acquisitions Editor may become the core of a permanent full-time position that would also entail significant sales responsibilities, calling on academics at a number of North-American universities.
Starting salary will range from $21,000-$25,000 a year for part-time and $35,000-$40,000 a year for full-time, depending on qualifications, experience, and hours worked per week. Health and dental benefits will also be offered.

The Groupe de recherche interuniversitaire en philosophie politique de Montréal (GRIPP), along with the Research Group on Constitutional Studies (RGCS) and Departments of Philosophy and Political Science at McGill University, will offer one or more postdoctoral fellowships at McGill in 2011-12. Area of specialization is open within political theory and political philosophy, but we are especially interested in applicants whose research is relevant to one or more of these GRIPP research themes:
- The history of liberal and democratic thought, especially early modern thought;
- Moral psychology and political agency, or politics and affect or emotions or rhetoric;
- Democracy, diversity and pluralism.
- Democracy, justice, and transnational institutions
Ph.D. must be in hand by 1 September 2011; preference may be given to candidates whose Ph.D.s will be in hand by 15 April 2011. Preference may also be extended to those with a knowledge of French, and to Canadian citizens or permanent residents; please indicate French knowledge and Canadian status in cover letter.
The fellow will be expected to be in residence at McGill for the academic year and to take part in GRIPP and RGCS workshops and conferences. The stipend will be at least $C27,000 and may be higher. Summer fellowships and paid teaching on top of the stipend are possible.

The University of Waterloo invites applications for the inaugural Wolfe Chair in Scientific and Technological Literacy. This newly endowed chair in the Department of Philosophy, secured through a national competition, is designed to take an institutional, national and international role in the promotion of scientific and technology literacy. The Department is seeking an established scholar with a record of highly-regarded research and teaching in a relevant field, including Philosophy of Science, Public Understanding of Science, History of Science, or Science, Technology and Society.
The mandate of the Wolfe Chair is to conduct research, teach, and perform public outreach regarding the intellectual foundations, nature and methods of scientific and technological innovation. The Chair will engage in research that advances understanding of key scientific and technological concepts and examines the relationships among science, technology, and broader factors (e.g., social, ethical, political, or economic). The Chair will also have development and leadership roles in the teaching of scientific and technological literacy, both within the University and as public education. The position includes funding for research-oriented and public-outreach events.
