      Department of Philosophy

      The Department of Philosophy consists of seventeen tenured or tenure-stream faculty members, and offers undergraduate and graduate (Master’s) programs to students from diverse backgrounds. Our faculty prides itself on the excellence of its research, the quality of its teaching and community engagement, the pluralism of its approach to philosophy, and its collegial work environment.

      • a curriculum vitae; 
      • a statement of the candidate’s research program, including plans for dissemination;

    Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts at Toronto Metropolitan University [www.torontomu.ca] (formerly Ryerson University) invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor effective July 1, 2026, subject to final budgetary approval.

    Normally, candidates must hold a doctoral degree in Philosophy by the appointment date. Candidates who are all-but-dissertation (ABD), and who are able to demonstrate that they will be very close to completion by the appointment date, may also be considered.

    The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, scholarly research or creative activity and service duties while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities. 

    Teaching duties will entail teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, and the supervision of graduate students. The standard teaching load is two courses in the Fall semester and two courses in the Winter semester. 

    The successful candidate will pursue a strong, innovative research program that produces cutting-edge, high quality results. 

    The successful candidate will participate in the academic life of the Department of Philosophy, and will contribute to the wider university, profession, or community, through service activities.

    Candidates must present evidence of: 

    • excellence in research (relative to career stage). Evidence of excellence may include: a robust research agenda; peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations in respected scholarly venues; strong letters of reference from well-established scholars; contributions to conference/symposia proceedings; book reviews; published reviews of the candidate’s work; other forms of scholarly expression, such as participation in public discourse and debate, and non-peer-reviewed publications which constitute a contribution to research; and awards, accolades, and other forms of recognition in the field.
    • potential for teaching excellence at all levels, including the capacity to supervise graduate students. Evidence of this potential should be presented in a teaching dossier that includes the following items (as applicable): a statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi, teaching evaluations, and records of other relevant achievements in teaching.
    • a commitment to our values of equity, diversity, and inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly research or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and 
    • an ability and willingness to contribute to the life of the Department of Philosophy and the University through collegial service.
