Call for Nominations: Society for Socialist Studies Book Prize 2027

The  Society for Socialist Studies awards an annual book prize for a significant contribution to socialist research in Canada. The prize pays tribute to the scholarship of the Society's members and recognizes their publication achievements.

The Society invites nominations of books that facilitate and encourage research and analysis with an emphasis on socialist, feminist, anti-racist, anti-colonial/decolonial, and ecological points of view.

Eligibility

  • Single or jointly authored original books. Edited collections, textbooks, and translations are not eligible.
  • For the 2027 award, the book must have a copyright date of 2025 or 2026.
  • A book may be nominated only once, in either of its two years of eligibility.

The prize

The prize includes an award of $500 and is presented at the Society's annual meeting. The winner is invited to give a keynote address at the following Society meeting, in 2028.

How to nominate

Nominations must include:

  • full publication information, including the copyright date;
  • confirmation that the nominator has secured the permission of the author(s) for the nomination; and
  • the email addresses of the author(s) and publisher.

Send nominations to the chair of the Book Prize committee, Phil Henderson (philhend@yorku.ca), who will provide contact information for all committee members.

Deadline: 4 Dec 2026

Submitting books

Nominators and authors must ensure that the publisher sends one copy of the book to each member of the Book Prize committee by 4 Dec 2026. If a publisher is unable to provide copies, they may come from the author's own allotment, and the jury will return them to the author.

Books published between 5–31 Dec 2026 remain eligible, provided the jury is informed of the mailing date.
