Wayne Sumner to Deliver Prestigious Canadian Journal of Philosophy Lecture at 2026 CPA Congress in Halifax
The Canadian Philosophical Association (CPA) and the Canadian Journal of Philosophy (CJP) are pleased to announce that Wayne Sumner, University Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto, will deliver this year's Canadian Journal of Philosophy Lecture at the upcoming CPA Congress.
Professor Sumner will present "Defending Morality," an examination of recent philosophical challenges to the authority and relevance of morality. The lecture takes up Ronald de Sousa's exposition of amoralism and mounts a rigorous defence of morality against it.
Wayne Sumner is University Professor Emeritus in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Toronto. His professional teaching and research have focused on ethical theory, applied ethics (especially bioethics), political philosophy, and philosophy of law. Over the years, he has published eight books, six in these philosophical areas and two in legal history. He continues to think that they were pretty good, though some were better than others. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the recipient of the 2009 Molson Prize in Social Sciences and Humanities from the Canada Council for the Arts.
The CJP Lecture is a highlight of the annual CPA Congress, showcasing cutting-edge philosophical research by leading scholars in Canada.
