The Canadian Philosophical Association (CPA) and the  Canadian Journal of Philosophy (CJP) are pleased to announce that Dr. Christine Tappolet of Université de Montréal will deliver this year's Canadian Journal of Philosophy Lecture at the upcoming CPA Congress.

Dr. Tappolet will present "Valuings as Sentiments," a groundbreaking exploration of the nature of valuation and affective states in philosophical discourse. The paper on which the presentation is based is co-authored by Dr. Mauro Rossi (Université du Québec à Montréal).

The lecture challenges dominant theories in contemporary philosophy about what it means to value something. Tappolet and Rossi critique existing accounts that frame valuing as either first-order or second-order desires, beliefs about value, or emotions. Instead, they propose a novel affective account that conceptualizes valuing as having a particular sentiment toward something.

"What distinguishes our approach from standard affective accounts is that we don't reduce valuing to a single type of affective state," explains Dr. Tappolet. "Rather, we argue that 'valuing' encompasses a class of affective states—namely, sentiments—which can be of different types, suggesting there are multiple ways of valuing things."

Dr. Tappolet is a distinguished philosopher whose research focuses on meta-ethics, moral psychology, and the philosophy of emotions. She is a professor in the Department of Philosophy at Université de Montréal and has published extensively on emotional experience and value theory.

The CJP Lecture is a highlight of the annual CPA Congress, showcasing cutting-edge philosophical research by leading scholars in Canada. This year's presentation promises to stimulate important discussions about the intersection of emotions, values, and human experience.
