CPA and CSHPS Announce 2026 Drake Lecture: Françoise Baylis on Building Better (Human) Beings: Gattaca Stack & Prediction Markets

 

The  Canadian Philosophical Association (CPA) and the  Canadian Society for the History and Philosophy of Science (CSHPS) are pleased to announce that the 2026 Stillman Drake Lecture will be delivered by Françoise Baylis, Distinguished Research Professor Emerita at Dalhousie University and President of the Royal Society of Canada.

The lecture, titled Building Better (Human) Beings: Gattaca Stack & Prediction Markets, will take place on Saturday, 6 June 2026, as part of the CPA's Annual Congress at the Marion McCain Arts and Social Sciences Building, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The Drake Lecture is an annual named lecture of CSHPS, honouring the legacy of Stillman Drake, the renowned historian of science. The 2026 lecture is co-presented with the CPA as part of the congress program at Dalhousie.

Françoise Baylis is one of Canada's most distinguished philosophers and bioethicists, known for her groundbreaking work at the intersection of ethics, policy, and practice. A member of the Order of Canada and the Order of Nova Scotia, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, she has shaped international debate on human genome editing, assisted reproduction, and biotechnology governance. Her book Altered Inheritance: CRISPR and the Ethics of Human Genome Editing (Harvard University Press, 2019) is a landmark contribution to the field.
