In Memoriam: Charles W. Mills

The CPA is saddened to learn of the death of Charles W. Mills (1951-2021) on September 20th. Mills was Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the Graduate Center, CUNY. This past June, Mills generously shared his experiences as a Black philosopher and scholar at a CPA roundtable on Racism and Colonialism in Canadian Philosophy. Mills graduated from the University of Toronto in 1985, and went on to appointments at the University of Oklahoma, the University of Illinois Chicago, and Northwestern University, before joining the faculty of the Graduate Center in 2016. The author of six books and numerous journal articles and commentaries, Mills’s impact reached beyond philosophy. He is remembered as a gifted philosopher and a kind and generous friend.
