The Department of Philosophy at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level.  

The anticipated start date for this appointment is July 1, 2026, or another mutually agreed-upon date in 2026. 

The successful candidate will have a specialization in AI Ethics and a PhD in philosophy by the time of appointment (or shortly thereafter). The successful candidate will teach courses ranging from large service courses to small graduate seminars. The teaching commitment for this position is 5 courses per year. Evidence of successful teaching and engagement with students is required, as is evidence of research excellence that contributes to the Philosophy Department’s graduate recruitment. The successful candidate will have evidence of a successful research program in AI ethics.

The ideal candidate will increase the Philosophy Department’s profile in AI Ethics through publications, grants, graduate student supervision, undergraduate student recruitment, community outreach, and industry partnerships. More specifically, the ideal candidate will play a leading role in growing our graduate program in the Ethics of AI. This program is unique in that graduate students have the option to complete either a traditional academic thesis, or an ethics audit – where students collaborate directly with AI researchers or industry partners to evaluate the ethical dimensions of an AI project. The successful applicant will be expected to supervise students conducting ethics audits in collaboration with academic and industry partners, as well as contribute to the intellectual life of CARE-AI (the Centre for Advancing Responsible and Ethical AI).

The Diversity Statement can include a discussion of any barriers or experiences you have faced or are facing as a member of an underrepresented group. 

University of Guelph is a leading comprehensive Canadian university. The Philosophy Department belongs to the College of Arts, one of the seven colleges that comprise the University of Guelph. There are 16 full-time faculty with teaching and research interests that span the discipline. Many faculty members are interdisciplinary in their research, and all faculty contribute to undergraduate and graduate education. The department has an established graduate program, offering M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. There are currently about 40 graduate students, in all graduate degree programs. The Department engages in collaborative specializations at the graduate level with several other academic units, including a thriving specialization in AI Ethics.
