Call for Papers: Annual Meeting of The Canadian Philosophical Association
Dalhousie University, Halifax, 6-9 June 2026
The Canadian Philosophical Association invites submissions of papers, abstracts, and symposium proposals for our 2026 annual meeting. This year’s meeting is an independent event, and three other FHSS member organizations will join in Halifax:
-
CSHPS (Canadian Society for the History and Philosophy of Science, meeting 4-6 June)
-
CSHPM (Canadian Society for the History and Philosophy of Mathematics, meeting 4-6 June)
-
CSSPE (Canadian Society for the Study of Practical Ethics, meeting 7-9 June)
The overlap will enable the enjoyment of many benefits associated with Congress, including some jointly organized sessions.
The CPA meeting, held from 6-9 June, will feature concurrent colloquia and symposia, and plenary keynotes, including a talk by a distinguished philosopher sponsored by the Canadian Journal of Philosophy and (together with CSHPS) a co-sponsored talk that is part of the CSHPS annual Drake Lecture series. Please check the conference website for additional updates.
The program committee anonymously referees both abstracts and full papers, and will consider proposals for symposia. Submissions in all areas of philosophy are welcome. The CPA is committed to organizing an accessible and inclusive meeting.
The deadline for proposals is 12 December 2025 at 11:59pm ET.
Please note the requirements for the following submission alternatives:
-
Submit a completed paper of no more than 3000 words. Papers exceeding this word count will not be considered. Word count does not include the bibliography, notes, or abstract. Submitted papers must include an abstract of no more than 50 words. Accepted papers will be scheduled for hour-long sessions (30-35 minutes for presentation, followed by a discussion period).
-
Submit an abstract of 500-750 words (excluding bibliography). The abstract should give a clear idea of the central theses defended, and of the arguments to defend them. Accepted abstracts will be scheduled for half-hour sessions (20 minutes for presentation followed by a discussion period). Abstracts are not eligible for essay prizes.
-
Proposals for symposia must be 500-750 words, and must include (i) a description of the topic of the symposium and its importance (recommended: a brief 100-200 word description for each presentation); and (ii) a list of participants who have confirmed attendance.
Symposia run for three hours and include at least three speakers—limit of one symposium proposal per organizer. We strongly encourage submissions that include presentations in French or that bring together presenters from more than one region of Canada.
Participants can show up in the program only in one primary role, either as a speaker in a symposium or as an author of a paper (either full or based on an abstract). However, participants can and are encouraged to also comment on and chair other sessions.
All submissions will be managed through Google forms. Upon submission, you will be prompted to choose two areas of philosophy. Please choose the areas that best fit your submission. Even imperfect matches will help the Program Committee find appropriate referees for your submission.
Submissions must be made by an active member of the CPA. New member enrollment and membership renewals for 2026 will be accepted starting 1 October 2025. Please visit www.acpcpa.ca/join for more information.
A number of prizes are awarded by the Association for essays submitted for the Annual Meeting: two faculty essay prizes (one tenured, one non-tenured) and up to three student essay prizes (one student prize is reserved for each official language). In a forthcoming issue of Dialogue: Canadian Philosophical Review, prize winners from that year's Annual Meeting will be announced, and a short list of exceptional papers that have been vetted by journal reviewers will be published. Prize winners are encouraged to submit their publication-ready papers to Dialogue early.
Finally, we extend a Call for volunteers to referee papers, or to chair, and/or comment at the meeting. If you are interested in volunteering for these roles, please click here.
